Our Projects

The following is an outline of the different projects we have planned in order to present our history in the most effective way possible. Some of the projects have already started and been completed, with several others still on the drawing board. We give you this project update to inform you of our progress and our future plans.

Project #1

The writing and publishing of a book on the History of Nixon and Southern Gonzales County.

Status:  South of the Guadalupe has been written about Nixon and Southern Gonzales County, was published in 2006 and has been distributed.

Approximate cost: $40,000.00          Paid in Full

Project #2

The writing and publishing of a book on the entire history of the area between the Guadalupe and Atascosa/Nueces Rivers.

Status: The Birthplace of the American Cowboy has been written about the history of the lands between the Guadalupe and Atascosa/Nueces Rivers, was published in 2020 and has been distributed.

Project #3

Locating old settlements in the area and the trails that ran through them.

  1. Historical marker about the founding of Rancho.
    Status:  Historical marker in place on Highway 80 some 300 yards west of Rancho townsite.

    Approximate cost    $1,800.00        Paid in Full

  2. Historical marker marking the site of the Rancho Road, which was a spur of the Chisholm Trail. Today this trail is called Rancho Road and runs across the western part of Nixon.

    Approximate cost    $1,800.00        Paid in Full 

  3. Historical marker on the  location of the old Indianola Trail.  This trail runs east to west across the southern part of Nixon continue through  across the old settlement of Rancho.
    Status:  Historical marker in place on Highway 80 about 3 miles north of Nixon.

Project #4

Historical marker about the founding of Nixon.

Status:  Historical marker in place on Highway 80 on Nixon post office parking lot.

Project #5

Rock Wall displaying 6 picture markers about the founding of Nixon, placed alongside the Nixon Historical Marker.

Status: Wall has been completed and pictorial markers in place. Location is behind the historical marker on Highway 80 on Nixon post office parking lot.

Project #6

Print 57 Pictorial markers to be displayed at various location across the city of Nixon.

Status: Completed

Project #7

 

Establish Rancho Historical Park on Highway 80,  two miles north of Nixon. Park site donated by WATERBRIDGE SWD Company. (25 year lease on property with 25 year option)

Status: Completed

Site preparation cost: $20,000.00     Paid in Full

Project #8

Mark old town site of Rancho with 15 historical markers showing locations of early businesses locations.

Status: Completed

Cost of Signs and installation:  $5,000.00        Paid in Full

Project #9

Print 30 Pictorial markers to be displayed on walking trail at Rancho. Site will be behind the Rancho Historical Marker on Hwy. 80.

Status: Completed

Approximate cost: $10,000.00        Paid in Full

Wes Hardin Tour. Print 23 pictorial markers and place at key sites.

Status: Complete

Wes Hardin Film Strip with narrative.

4 Silhouettes on each of four Welcome to Nixon Mounds on Hwy. 87 and Hwy. 80

Move log cabin to Rancho Park and repair on-site.
